Indo-American Heritage Museum Intern Opportunities

The Indo-American Heritage Museum (IAHM) of Chicago, Illinois seeks a team of five to six interns for the winter/spring semester to collect 30 oral histories of Indian American immigrants. Each position will require ten to fifteen hours per week.

Duties include:
  • attending training on best practices in oral history collection and processing
  • researching the backgrounds of interview subjects
  • traveling to interview subject homes to conduct interviews
  • operating recording devices and taking photographs, digital file management
  • transcribing and cataloguing recordings, and selecting excerpts for posting on the IAHM website. 
The project leader is Tamara Biggs, IAHM board member and Director of Exhibitions at the Chicago History Museum (CHM). Peter T. Alter, CHM Director of the Studs Terkel Oral History Center, will serve as the project’s oral history advisor. The project is funded by a grant from the Chicago Community Trust. Interns will each receive a stipend of $300 per term. The project will begin in mid-January.

Preferred qualifications: graduate student in the fields of history, museum studies, journalism, sociology or anthropology. Valid driver’s license. Own vehicle a plus.
