The National History Center Internship Program welcomes students to help us bring history into broader public conversation about current events and the shared futures of the United States and the wider world. We expose history students to the varied possibilities for careers in history. Our interns work on the Center’s Congressional briefings program, communications, and nonprofit management. The skills they gain during their time with us help them pursue careers inside and outside the field of history.
Besides the practical skills in new technologies, writing, and professional communications that interns gain with us, they have opportunities to attend Congressional briefings and seminars given by leading historians. In addition, interns build a strong network within the community of historians in academia, the government, and public history institutions.
Internship are unpaid, although occasional paid work may arise.
All interns receive a free student membership in the American Historical Association, the parent organization of the National History Center.
The Center is located on Capitol Hill at 400 A Street SE, a short walk from the Capital South Metro Station.
